Why Do This In The First Place???

That, neighbors, is the $64,000 question. What is the driving force behind DPWT's persistent interest in increasing speed and bringing trucks through the creek? Is it really public safety? It very well could be, and noone would oppose something they felt was in their family's interest. So it is in our best interest to consider the many possibilities before reaching a conclusion.

  • Pedestrian or Driver Safety?

Is pedestrian or driver safety really the motivating factor here?

  • Would anyone really walk from Mills Farm to Dufief Mill Road to visit a friend or to Travilah Elementary? And then walk back??
  • Imagine yourself as a passenger, your teenage son or daughter preparing to turn onto Quince Orchard Road. Do you feel safer with cars approaching you faster... or slower? How about with a dump truck full of asphault coming at you at 50 mph? The natural curve we have now is a speed deterent,
  • Are you aware of groups of people clamoring for higher speeds through the creek? No one in DPWT has been able to point to any specific group, outside of their own agency, that begs for this.
  • Resume Building?  "As the ___________ of MC DPWT, I was responsible for an $8M project to widen..... "
One possibility, suggested by several individuals, is that it would be a great item to have on an engineering resume.  So we get to live with the disasterous result, and the engineers get to put a bullet item on their resumes.

  • Pain Sharing? Could there be "dilemma between concience and convenience" ?
Does someone influential in DPWT reside along one of the "dump truck routes" who perhaps wants to lighten their own noise burden by offloading some upon us?
